13 April 2010 – Results of Roundtable 3 and thank you for coming out to our Mix & Mingle!
HUMAN INTONATION presents…
A Women 2 Women HIV Roundtable Discussion - Series 3 (RESULTS)
We have had some astounding feedback from our last HUMAN INTONATION presents…A Women 2 Women HIV Roundtable. Our discussion has reached participants in a way that has empowered them to do what some did not do before…INSIST on using protection each and every time!
A few take-a-ways from Roundtable 3:
-
Empowerment: Of all the reasons we have uncovered about why a women may engage in unprotected sex, there must be an underlying sense of empowerment in each of us to overcome these various reasons.
- If we are to be effective in affecting behavioural change at large we have to understand the motivation or feelings behind the decision – making process of individual women that lead to their sexual behaviours – giving statistics is not enough.
- Any messaging in the media set to empower women to insist on protecting themselves needs to be designed in a way that touches different stories - there is no one single message that will influence all women. And the Face of AIDS as a woman of colour must be brought forward.
- We must bring men into the conversation as well – there must be a counter part to empowering women to make healthy choices about sex.
- This series was the first step in a larger study and campaign in development – remember that we all have skills to bring to the table in constructing ways to empower ourselves and helping others become empowered – please be prepared to continue to participate in this project with HUMAN INTONATION.
A special Thank You to the African American Coalition Against AIDS for partnering with HUMAN INTONATION for our 3rd Women 2 Women HIV Roundtable Series! A huge thank you to AACAA Board Member Dionne Fraser. This has been an extremely active collaboration.
Thank you to our facilitator Dee Bailey, Founder of Watchful Eye and to all of you who helped me organize this event and to those taking our mission out into the media – THANK YOU!

23 February 2010 - RESULTS! HUMAN INTONATION holds a 2nd Successful Women 2 Women HIV Roundtable

A few take-a-ways from last night:
We, as Women…as Women of Colour, are empowered to do something great and far-reaching to impact the spread of HIV and AIDS in this country. It up to us to stop this epidemic. We recapped the issues discussed at the last roundtable:
- The key role that self-worth plays in the decision making process regarding sex
- The 2:1 ratio of Black women to Black men in New York City
- Concern over labeling behaviour rather than treatment
- HIV testing is not mandatory for those being released from prison
- The institution of marriage does not protect you against HIV infection
- The role of churches.
- The process of empowering ourselves as women of color to insist on protecting ourselves starts with being honest with ourselves about our own feelings and behaviours. How do we feel individually about negotiation the use of protection during sex?
- We must also be inclusive of influencing our peers to make smart healthy choices about sex
- We are in need of developing both short term and long term solutions and initiatives that will make an impact through our developing message
- We encourage all of you to continue this conversation now with your friends, family, and circle of influence – it is not easy to do but we must start the conversation, pushing past our discomfort. There are so many opportunities to include HIV/AIDS awareness in our daily lives whether it is over dinner, while we are out shopping, our getting on the agendas of our churches and community organization meetings
- For our the next Roundtable please plan for a larger constructive workshop as we tangibly compose this message around women and girls insisting on protecting themselves each and every time. A message to be carried out in mass
Congratulations to Natalie Brown our Raffle winner of Dr. Sweeney’s book, “Condom Sense”! We made a $50 donation to Advocates for Youth from the Raffle last night.
Again thank you to our facilitators Dr. Monica Sweeney for leading such a spirited discussion and to our special guests Maria Davis and Urooj Arshad.
A special Thank You to the African American Coalition Against AIDS for their generous sponsorship in part of Tuesday night’s event. It was extremely helpful. To all of you who helped me organize this event and to those taking our mission out into the media – THANK YOU!
21 January 2010 - Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts & Wyclef Jean
We want thank everyone who spread the word, made a donation, and/or came out to support last night’s Yéle Haiti Fundraiser sponsored by HUMAN INTONATION & B. Smith. Again B. Smith was a huge supporter of ours and a gracious hostess of the event. This event raise nearly $3,000 for Yéle Haiti through raffles, individual donations, and purchases from HUMAN INTONATION, we were also greeted by a surprise special guest!

During a brief introduction Wyclef Jean addressed the crowd to express both his gratitude for our efforts and to keep in mind that this is just the beginning. Very much in line with the mission of HUMAN INTONATION, Wyclef expressed that when the lights die down and the media packs up their cameras there will be so much more work to be done to re-build a stronger, modern Haiti.
Before the end of the evening I was able to meet Wyclef and introduce our “Healing Haiti” Tee from HUMAN INTONATION to him. He was immediately excited about it, said he liked it and he now owns one for himself!
To HAITI...with Love a Fundraiser

23 February - Save the Date for Our Next Roundtable
HUMAN INTONATION presents… A Women 2 Women HIV Roundtable Participant Discussion ( By Invitation)

|
On Thursday, December 3, 2009, apparel by HUMAN INTONATION initiated an open and honest discussion between 15 to 20 influential women of colour from various backgrounds to uncover and discuss some of the factors behind why a woman may or may not insist on using protection during sex every single time as a measure against possible HIV infection.
Through a facilitated, confidential discussion led by Divinah “Dee” Bailey, Founder of the organization Watchful Eye, we invited participants to bring their own experiences to the roundtable as a way of addressing this topic that is often kept secret from one another but greatly impacts each of us. |
A Few Take-a-ways from our First Roundtable:
- We, as Women…as Women of Colour, are empowered to do something great and far-reaching to impact the spread of HIV and AIDS in this country
- HIV infection is 100% preventable – protect yourself every single time
- We do not have to wait until the next time we come together to start making an impact with our developing message; continue this conversation now with your friends, family, and circle of influence – talk to 5 to 10 people about it and challenge those ladies and men to talk to another 5 to 10 people
There is more to follow from this empowering evening!!!
The next HUMAN INTONATION Women 2 Women Roundtable Discussion will take place in February 2010 as we move forward with shaping our campaign message!

Verneda White with Evina Scott, the originators of what has become H.I. and a Verneda White with several Roundtable participants
Dee Bailey and the women of Watchful Eye really led an amazing discussion! Thank you!
Again thank you to our facilitators Dee Bailey and the ladies of Watchful Eye for leading such a spirited discussion. To all of you who helped me organize this event and to those taking our mission out into the media.

Thank You!!! “Fashion’s Siren for Change: HUMAN INTONATION” a success on 22 July 2009
 |
We at HUMAN INTONATION are still ecstatic with “Fashion’s Siren for Change: HUMAN INTONATION”. It was an exciting evening at the Aperture Gallery of fierce fashion, stunning art performances, and philanthropy. From the opening reception where guests had a chance to learn more about the social and human rights issues we support, to the dramatic reveal of our new collection in a ballet inspired fashion show hosted by international recording artist J-Harris, the entire evening was more than we could dreamed of. The fashion show was braced by thought provoking video imagery from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, efforts |
around HIV prevention, along with clips from “Darfur Diaries: A Message From Home”, and a heart felt ballet solo from Alvin Ailey student Chloe Abel! Thank you to you all of you for coming out to support this event!
I want to thank everyone who helped to plan “Fashion’s Siren for Change: HUMAN INTONATION” as we debuted our second season with our first line of HUMAN INTONATION long sleeve tees for men & women and dresses using new designs to call attention to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, youth & minority HIV/AIDS prevention, and education for children in Darfur. As always we make our own t-shirts and dresses from scratch! The décor around the runway really set the tone for the night from the creativity of Renee Millett and Robert Carroll, topped off with a special art installation from the very talented Fernando Mora. Plus, everyone felt at home with DJ Zeke spinning the best of Michael Jackson on the 1s and 2s!
This year we focused on raising funds specifically for the Darfur Peace & Development Org (DPDO) and raised nearly $1700, about twice the amount we raised last summer at the launch of HUMAN INTONATION! It was great to have both the Executive Director and the Dir. of Programs of the Darfur Peace & Development Org in the audience. And there is still time to donate! If you were not able to attend “Fashion’s Siren for Change” or would like to support HUMAN INTONATION and the Darfur Peace & Development Org* please contact us at info@humanintonation.com to complete you tax-deductible donation. Thank you for your support!

*How your donations at “Fashion’s Siren for Change: HUMAN INTONATION” will help DPDO!
The Darfur Peace & Development Organization’s mission is to provide humanitarian relief to victims of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, to facilitate just governance, and to enable Darfurians to effectively rebuild and develop their homeland. In 2009, Due to the recent expulsions of several of the largest humanitarian organizations from Darfur, the education sector has been severely impacted. Thousands of Darfuri children are now without access to schools. DPDO’s fifteen schools were not affected by the expulsion order. In order for DPDO to be able to step in and fill the gaps left by the expelled organizations, increased funding is a necessity. www.darfurpeace.org

Volunteer Drive for Hands On New Orleans – November 26th to 29th - Servicing Thanksgiving 2008! |

Team HUMAN INTONATION is back from New Orleans!!!
Team HUMAN INTONATION is back from New Orleans with many great things to share. First we would like to thank our volunteers who travelled with us, Brittany Simmons and Amber Cooper and a big thank you to everyone at Hands On New Orleans who welcomed us right back. We had two exciting days of giving back.
On Thursday November 27, 2008, Thanksgiving Day we spent the day at the new HONO house on Banks Street. We were given a tour of the house and it was exciting to see this HONO project come into fruition after years of using temporary housing across New Orleans. HONO coordinators prepped for a community Thanksgiving Dinner that would feed about 40 HONO volunteers for the day. HUMAN INTONATION also donated the beverages for the meal. Creative Director Verneda White had the opportunity to meet with HONO Executive Director Kellie Bentz and to present her with her own HUMAN INTONATION tee!
On Friday November 28th, Team HUMAN INTONATION joined HONO volunteers to work on the State Farm Bayou Classic and KABOOM! playground build at Abramson Science & Technology Charter School (5552 Read Boulevard) in New Orleans East. Abramson is one of several charter schools built to fill the void in available education left by Hurricane Katrina. When the school opened in August 2007 it did not have any electricity, let alone a playground for its students. The playground will also be a safe place for children in the community to play where there have not been any options since the storm.
While it was amazing to see the progress Hands On New Orleans has made over the last two years it was also quite clear that much work is still needed to bolster to the on-going work that this amazing volunteer organization is pouring into the soul of New Orleans. Contrary to two years ago the number of HONO volunteers, both long term and short term is smaller, as is the overall sense of urgency to revitalize and renew the city of New Orleans. Yes, the Super dome is back but what about your everyday friends, family, and neighbours for whom moving back into their homes is still just a hope and a dream? There is still much to do and we are happy to help!
